an ocean of inspiration

February 19, 2010

For Valentine’s Day, my fiancĂ© Jim and I decided to head down to Ocean City, New Jersey for the day. We’re pretty low-key when it comes to grand romatic gestures, and while he always gets me beautiful flowers for Valentine’s, we never opt for the fancy dinner. I also completely loving going down the shore in the winter when very few people are around.* If you look in on my photo page, most of the beach pictures were taken during the winter rather than the summer. I find it very calm and serene and completely inspiring. I have also long-dreamt of visiting a snow-covered beach–ever since I saw Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet play on a snowy beach in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. So what better opportunity than four days after two of the biggest snow storms to ever hit this part of the country?

With the promise of excellent photo ops, a chance to play with our new puppy, Barney, and an assurance for Jim that we would get some Mack & Manco’s Pizza, we made the 45-minute trip down the shore.** For the first time ever, though, we were not the only ones freezing our toes off in February. The boardwalk and our favorite pizza shop were packed! Apparently everyone in the area had the same great idea and was equally excited to see the snow-covered beach and boardwalk. We ended up sitting in the car to eat our pizza as the restaurant was too crowded and it was absolutely freezing outside. Jim then proceeded to run Barney up and down the beach while I set to my picture-taking.*** I have included some of my favorites for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

*”Down the shore”, for those of you not from PA of NJ, is an expression I once hated. For unknown reasons, I avoided it and always said “going to the beach”. I have now conceded to this regional expression, although I still grimace internally when I use it.
**People come from all over to eat at Mack & Manco’s. It is delicious and I highly recommend it!
***In case you were wondering, yes, Barney is named in honor of Neil Patrick Harris’s famous How I Met Your Mother character, Barnabus Stinson.
