Lalla Essaydi’s Revisions

June 29, 2012

Friends, I must tell you briefly about Lalla Essaydi’s new exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. You may remember my post after Essaydi’s Femmes du Maroc show in 2010. If my post peaked your interest even in the slightest, I strongly encourage you to visit Revisions, which is on display until February of 2012. While I have many complicated opinions and reactions to this show, far too many to indulge in here, I feel this show is one of great significance. Not just because I love Essaydi, but because this exhibit offers Westerners, who typically have very little experience with Islamic or African art, the chance to see something new. Essaydi presents an opportunity to learn about her culture, her experiences living between East and West, and about historic interactions of East and West that have shaped Morocco today. The show is powerful and deserves some portion of your time if you can give it.
